Suncoast Lodge # 562 1977 - 1986 - by Margaret Falkenberg It was just a little over ten years ago that a big blonde Viking, with a twinkle in his eye and a Sons of Norway Song Book in his hand, started on his mission to sign up enough members for a new Sons of Norway Lodge. Sarasota Lodge was the Sponsor and Roger Sean their representative. On January 15, 1977, we had our first meeting at the German American Hall with 23 members present. More was accomplished at our February 14th meeting. We selected the officers, determined that our meetings (combined business and social) be held the 4th Friday of each month at Barringer Hall, Largo: board meetings on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at the Country Squires Restaurant (courtesy of Sophie and Ole Vigelsjo) and we decided on the name, Suncoast Lodge. The election of officers was held February 28 at Ramada Inn Clearwater. March 5, 1977 was the big event! The institution of Suncoast Lodge #562 and the installation of officers were the highlights of a beautiful evening of cocktails, dinner and dancing at the Ramada Inn. Brother Edmund Trabulsy, Directory of the Supreme Lodge, was the installing officer. There were 102 charter members at the institution and 143 when the charter closed. Our Brothers and Sisters from the Sarasota Lodge had accomplished what they set out to do and the rest was up to us. We did not waste much time that first year. Editor Ray Fyhrie published the first Suncoast Newsletter in May on a single, legal sized, sheet of paper and mailed it with a 13-cent stamp. Marion Nilsen started collecting stamps for Tubfrim and has been doing it ever since. Cultural Director, Margaret Clausen, started a Language (Norske) class with Henrik Hansen as instructor, and together with Stan Norman, started the singing group known as “De Glade Norske Singers”(they made their debut in December at the Swedish Club). Sports Director Einar Melby sponsored the first annual picnic July 30th in Anderson Park with about 90 people attending. Vice President Joe Skodje was instrumental in our lodge joining the SPIFFS organization. On December 3rd our new lodge represented the Norwegian community, marching in costume carrying our new flag in the parade at the dedication of the SPIFFS building at the pier in St Petersburg. Brother George and Sister Margaret Kiev presented both the Norwegian and American flags to our lodge. A mini bazaar was held at the Lodge, the first of what has become a large production and a good source of income. We brought our first Viking Queen, Linda Pedersen, to Jensen Beach for the Leif Erikson Festival. Since our first slate of officers served for only nine months, it was decided they should also serve in 1978. To save money, the first anniversary, installation of officers, and the presentation of the Charter were included in one gala evening at the Sheraton Sand Key Hotel at Clearwater Beach with Brother Ed Trabulsy again doing the honors. In February we had a food booth at the Folk Fair at Bayfront Center and the “de Glade Norske Singers” performed under the direction of Ray Fyhrie. By April we had outgrown Barringer Hall and moved to Ridgewood Recreation Hall in Seminole where we have been happy ever since. Our newsletter became the Suncoast Norske Newsletter. In June we sent our first delegates (3 of them) to the Third District Convention in Orlando. They paid their own expenses and Harry Sumstad received President of the Year award and was elected Zone 9 Director. Karin Clement was our Viking Queen and she came in second at Jensen Beach. In December, de Glade Norkse singers sang at the Lucia Festival at Grace Lutheran Church. The first folk dancing meeting was also held there under the direction of Harold Holm. This dance group became part of de Glade Norske Singers and Dancers and has participated in the Lucia Festival and Folk Fair every year thereafter. 1979 brought a new slate of officers with Joe Skodje as President. Our own Past Supreme Lodge President, Steen Jacobsen, installed them. Suncoast Viking Queen, Ethel Sumstad became the Florida Viking Queen at Jensen Beach. We bought our own sound system and started a Norwegian library. In 1980 the Installing Officer was Ed Trabulsy who, I am sure, was pleased with the progress our lodge has made. The newsletter mailing list was almost 300 so a booster’s sheet was added where, for $10.00 per year, you could get your name in the paper and help defray expenses. This year the Convention was held in Hartford Conn., with 4 delegates representing Suncoast #562. We received Lodge of the Year award as well as second place award for the Suncoast Norske Newsletter. Margaret Falkenburg was the Queen for 1980. In 1981 Joe Skodje was elected to a third term and installed by Sister Betsy Mathisen of Tampa Bay Lodge. Gladys Fieffer started a Rosemaling class and between that and the crafts and sewing group, the ladies provided many beautiful things to be sold at the Folk Fairs and Bazaars. Harriette Fyhrie was our queen for 1981. Also, this was the year of the boat. The idea of having a real Viking Boat, for our lodge, was introduced by President Joe Skodje, voted on, approved, and we were off to the races. In 1982 Ray Fyhrie became our new President and was installed by Egil Olsen, Director, International Lodge. Five delegates were sent to the convention in Philadelphia, PA. Joe Skodje received President of the Year award and was elected Zone Director and our newsletter won third place. The new Viking boat, Solkyst was launched at Philippe Park and it was voted to have a Syttende Mai Viking Regatta there in 1983 (this became a very successful annual event). Our impromptu bowling team won both High Man’s score and High Team score in Port Orange. Marion Hill was our Queen and it was a very good year. In 1983 Brother Steen Jacobsen installed the new officers with the assistance of Helen Skodje’s small drill team to give color to the ceremony. The Charitable Fund for the Lodge was instituted as well as the 50/50 club. Sister Ellen Ronning (who passed away In 1984 Egil Olsen, Director of International Lodge, installed our first woman President, Margaret Falkenburg in February, and additional input was given the Folk Fair when Brother Carl Fyhrie put a 10-foot high Statue of Liberty in the center of the floor for donations to the statue of Liberty Fund in New York. Harold Holm (V.P.) drew up the local lodge bylaws for Suncoast as well as for our Charitable Fund and they are now in effect. Five delegates went to the Third District Convention in Uniondale, NY. And Ray Fyhrie was overjoyed to receive both President of the Year and Lodge of the Year awards. Sister Helen Skodje became our Viking Queen. We participated in the Clearwater Christmas Parade with our boat float and our perennial flag bearers, Carl Fyhrie and George Falkenburg leading the costumed marchers. Fifty families received a turkey dinner with all the trimmings, plus toys for the children. At the Christmas party a large silk banner, designed by Harry Sumstad and donated by President Margaret Falkenburg, was presented to the Lodge. On January 25th, 1985 Henry Borgersen and the duly elected officers were installed by Brother Walter Ericksen. Also in January, Solkyst and crew were in the welcoming party when the Saga Siglar arrived in Tampa Bay, and de Glade Norkse Singers and Dancers participated in the opening of Harbor Island. On April 5th one of the most respected men in the Sons of Norway, Henry Borgersen, passed away in Maryland. He was a charter member of the Washington Lodge and services were held up there. A memorial service was also held at Ridgewood Hall, which his daughter and many friends attended. Vice President Jim Berge became our President. Also in April, we brought our usual 3 (Booth, Boat and crew, and De Glade Norske) to the Arts fest in Orlando for a very busy weekend. One of our younger members, Vibeke Holm was chosen as the 1985 recipient of the International Lodge’s $1,000 scholarship, for study at the Oslo International Summer School. In September, Gladys Fieffer became our Viking Queen. In 1986, Harry Sumstad and other elected officers were installed by International Secretary, Charles Gardner. Our Miss Norway Charlene Hummell, won the Miss SPIFFS crown. Solkyst and crew, as well as boats from Orlando and Ft Myers, were present at the groundbreaking ceremonies for the Norwegian pavilion in EPCOT. Quite an honor for these lodges. Tampa Lodge hosted the convention this year. De Glade Norske performed and Suncoast won the Regatta held on Norwegian Day at Harbor Island. Of our five delegates, three became District Officers - Joe Skodje, Social & Cultural Director; Harry Sumstad, Public Relations Director; and Walter Ericksen, Zone 9 Director. Mabel Dutot was our Viking Queen this year. It was fitting that Sister Arline Clark, Third District Counselor, from the Sarasota Lodge, install President Harry Sumstad (our first President) and the other officers on the 10th installation, January 23, 1987. Now we are looking forward to our 10th Anniversary Party and ten more wonderful years 1987-1991 written by Marion Hill For our 10th Anniversary (March, 1987) Margaret Falkenburg wrote a beautiful history of Suncoast Lodge #562, portraying all the happenings of the 10 years the Lodge had been in existence. Now in March, 1992, we come to another milestone - our 15th year! There have been more and more exciting events to report each year - that’s progress! - It’s difficult to review briefly.... The year 1987 (our 10th) repeated a bright beginning. Harry Sumstad (the first president of our Lodge) was again in command as our leader and president. Our 10th anniversary was enjoyed with a dinner party and we had visitors from many other lodges. On Feb. 8th our Viking ship received a plaque for 3rd place at the Gasparilla Invasion in Tampa. Syttende Mai was a regatta at Philippi Park and an evening dinner dance (Joe Skodje, Chairman). De Glade Norkse Dancers performed on 3 Norwegian Caribbean Lines Cruise ships (May 17 celebration). In August the Skodjes and Pedersens sponsored a Family Week at LOV. This year we aided in sponsoring a girl’s team for the S/N -USA Cup - an International Soccer Tournament sponsored by the Sons of Norway. Our annual Bazaar was advertised as a Norwegian Fall Festival, Helen Skodje, chairman, de Glade Norkse Singers and Dancers performed and demonstrations of Lefse making, Krumkaka and Waffle baking were given. In November SPIFFS initiated their International Ball - our first representative to this (“Citizen of the Year” it was called originally) was Harriette Fyhrie, (Ambassador Brian McDowell was unable to attend). December found de Glade Norkse Singers and Dancers in the Annual Lucia Program at Grace Lutheran Church. Bronze Awards were received for Lodge of the Year and President of the Year (awarded at the convention in 1988). The year 1988 began in a special way - our second woman President, Helen Skodje was installed by Edward Edwardsen, International Director, Harry Sumstad was presented a plaque for his presidency in 1986 and 1987: he had also been our president in 1977 and 1978, and has served our lodge in some capacity throughout the years. We participated in the SPIFFS Folk Fair with booths and entertainment by de Glade Norkse. We sent four delegates to the 3rd District Convention in Springfield, Massachusetts: Harry Sumstad and Joe Skodje were elected as delegates to the International Convention. Ray Fyhrie had charge of the May 17th Regatta, with a dinner dance in the evening at the Clearwater Country Club - our boat won the traveling trophy for winning three times. De Glade Norske Dance team performed at the opening ceremonies of the new Norwegian Pavilion at EPCOT. Our Viking Queen was Ruth Andresen, Margaret Falkenburg was chairman of our annual Bazaar. The Lodge’s “Person of the Year” attending SPIFFS International Ball, was Odd Pedersen and Karen Kurth was Ambassador. We sponsored the new Sun Viking Lodge this year. Thina Larsen was honored for 65 years in the Sons of Norway, and Einar Askeland for 50 years. Quite a year! Helen Skodje received the Gold Award (first place) as President of the year and the Lodge was given the first place as Lodge of the Year (awards were received at the 3rd District Convention in 1990) And again de Glade Norske shared in the beautiful pageantry of the Lucia Program at Grace Lutheran Church. In 1989 Helen Skodje was installed for the second time, as President Gunnar Grotos, 3rd District Treasurer, was the installing officer for the evening. The boat crew won a trophy at the Gasparilla Event in Tampa. Our Regatta, under Ray Fyhrie’s chairmanship, was again held at Philippe Park and Clearwater Country Club. SPIFFS Folk Fair was supported by the Norwegians, with booths and entertainment by de Glade Norske. A Sports Medal Program was initiated. A new dance team was organized by Helen and Joe Skodje, and our Viking ship won a trophy at Jensen Beach for the best -decorated in the parade. Helen Bukauskas, aided by Olivia Ickes, had charge of the Bazaar. At the bowling tournament in Port Orange our bowling team had one team winning first place, high man was Harry Sumstad, and high woman, Helen Skodje. Our Lodge was part of the Christmas Parade in Clearwater, and de Glade Norske performed at the Lucia Program as usual. Honors were again bestowed upon us - Lodge of the Year and President of the Year (awarded at the 1990 convention). The women of the lodge were happy in 1990 to have the third woman president, Doris Hansen, installed by our own Harry Sumstad. At the SPIFFS Folk Fair we had a cultural booth and entertainment by de Glade Norske. The Regatta, chaired by Ray Fyhrie, took place at Philippi Park and the Ramada Inn for the dinner dance. Four Delegates were sent to the 3rd District Convention in Trevose (Philadelphia), Pennsylvania, at which Harry Sumstad became Zone Director. (This was the convention at which we accepted the First Place awards for 1988 and 1989). In May our “Crafty Ladies” as they called themselves, were honored for the several years they met and made items for our bazaars. Cathie Torgerson and Verna Norman were also cited for handling the Bazaar Bake Sale for 11 years. Anna Feldtmose was honored for 55 years in the Sons of Norway; and Steen Jacobsen, Former International President, honored for 50 years. An evening Bazaar was launched by Ethel Sumstad, called “Scandinavian Festival”. A catered dinner was served by Scandia Restaurant. There were baking demonstrations, de Glade Norske Singers and Dancers entertained, and there was dancing to the tunes played by Bill Johnson on his accordion. A memorable evening attended by 150 people! Dorothy Esten was “Person of the Year” and Krissie Kurth, Ambassador at the SPIFFS International Ball. First Place trophy was won at the Port Orange Bowling Tournament - Harry Sumstad, high man, and Olga Jacobsen, high woman. A Medal was received for our continued participation in the Ybor City Festivities. Again we marched along side our ship in the Clearwater Christmas Parade, and de Glade Norske was part of the Lucia Program. Harry Sumstad installed Doris Hansen for the second year in 1991. The SPIFFS Folk Fair was held in the New Suncoast Dome, de Glade Norske performed. Our 14th Anniversary was hosted and served by the men of the Lodge. Joe Skodje arranged the Regatta this year at Philippi Park and dinner at the Moose Lodge Hall. Suncoast Women’s boat crew won first place. At one of our meetings, we were visited by Charlie Nilsen, 3rd District President, and Orlon Kringstad, Chief Fraternal Officer, from International Headquarters. We marched in the “Sun n Fun” parade in Clearwater. Bowling plaques were awarded to Linda Pedersen, Ray Fyhrie, Harry Sumstad, George Lynch, and Odd Pedersen: Trophies were given to Helen Skodje and George Lynch. Our annual Lucia participation was repeated and we had a booth at the SPIFFS Christmas Bazaar in St. Petersburg. At our own Lodge Christmas Party we again gave of our “hearts” with gifts for the needy children of Clearwater. For the eighth year our theme for Christmas has been “A Boatload of Toys for Needy Girls and Boys”. Odd Pedersen has worked on this project and has gathered in a fantastic individual “Officer Friendly” of the Clearwater Police Department. Officer Friendly makes quite a Santa’s helper - as our own Santa Claus, Harry Sumstad thrills the children. March 21 1992, our 15th Anniversary is being celebrated at the Wine Cellar, North Redington Beach - under Ray Fyhrie’s Chairmanship. Our new President is Odd Gronner. We have had many changes since March 1977, and in looking back we can truly say we have improved every year in some way or another. Our membership, especially those serving on the 1992 board, look forward to a banner year for Suncoast Lodge - 15 years old! And we look toward the next special date - March 1997 - our 20th! 1992 - 1996 written by Ethel Sumstad Two previous histories have been written about Suncoast Lodge - one at 10 years and another at 15 years. This year we celebrate our 20th anniversary - a monumental one at that! It is difficult to realize that 20 years have transpired since a group of people, interested in forming a new Sons of Norway Lodge, gathered together in the German American Hall in order to discuss goals and to elect officers. Roger Sean, of Sarasota, was the driving force behind this project and he worked hard and long to achieve success in forming this new lodge. During these last 20 years we have strived to make our Norwegian heritage the focus of our lodge. The year 1992 commenced with Odd Gronner being installed as President. We had a successful Syttende Mai Regatta with Joe Skodje serving as chairman and Bjorn Ravenstad as *Assistant Chairman. This was the year we were eased out of our regular meeting night at the American Legion Hall and began meeting at Christ Presbyterian Church. One of the highlights of the year was a concert held at the church in March. Our own Mary Jane Linzalone, a talented and accomplished concert pianist, together with Tom Poler, a well known baritone, formerly with the Metropolitan Opera, presented a flawless performance, to the delight of those attending. As in past years, we participated in the “Fun n Sun” Parade in Clearwater with Harry Sumstad serving as chairman. We have always been enthusiastically cheered by those along the parade route. Our Vikings have always been extremely popular. This was the year that Sun Viking’s Clair Eriksen was elected Zone Director and Helen Skodje Assistant Zone Director. De Glade Norkse Singers and Dancers had a busy schedule, including a performance at the St Petersburg Folk Festival, which was attended by record crowds. The Dancers had the honor of being asked to perform at both Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater and Van Wetzel Hall in Sarasota. The Bronze Sports Medal was awarded to Bob and Doris Hansen and Joe and Helen Skokje, the Silver Medal was awarded to Jim and Terri Berge. The Scandinavian Festival was well attended with Ethel Sumstad serving as Chairperson. In October, Odd Gronner resigned the presidency due to personal reasons and Joe Skodje assumed the post. Talented Ed Manson refurbished the Viking Boat, which was badly in need of repair. Joe Skodje was elected President in 1993 with Sarasota’s Arline Clark doing the installing. Steen Jacobsen, former Supreme President, was made Honorary Trustee. Again, we participated in the “ Fun n Sun” Parade, with Harry Sumstad serving as Chairman. George and Marie Lynch generously donated a Canadian flag to our lodge. Due to an available opening, our lodge meetings were once again moved back to the American Legion Hall. Our annual Syttende Mai Regatta was held and once again proved to be a popular and profitable event for our lodge. Gold Sports Medals were awarded to Ethel Sumstad and Ray Fyhrie. The Silver went to Bob and Doris Hansen, as well as Joe and Helen Skodje. Many members donated many hours in order to make this year’s Scandinavian Festival a success, which was chaired by Ethel Sumstad. A vote was taken to determine interest in creating a new District in Florida. There were 38 votes in favor and 18 dissenting. Again, in 1994, Joe Skodje was installed as President with Harry Sumstad officiating. This year George Lynch and Bill Leonard assumed the chairmanship of the Regatta. We held our first Memorial Service at Grace Lutheran Church on March 13th, with good support from other lodges. This was voted on and passed, to become an annual event due to the enthusiastic response. Chairpersons for the service were Jim and Terri Berge and Helen and Joe Skodje. We participated in the “Fun n Sun” Parade with large crowds along the parade route. Twenty-Five year membership pins were awarded to Bob and Doris Hansen. Sandy Inman and Eleanore Skulstad volunteered to act as co-chairpersons of the annual Scandinavian Festival which, along with the Syttende Mai Regatta, have been the major moneymakers for our lodge. At the 3rd District Convention, Suncoast Lodge was awarded Lodge of the Year for 1993 and Joe Skodje received the President of the Year Award. Life Membership pins were presented to Harry and Ethel Sumstad as well as Fred Ericksen. The year 1995 was a monumental one, as we celebrated the 100th anniversary of Sons of Norway. George Lynch was voted in as President with Clair Eriksen doing the honors. It should be noted that Poul and Carol Madsen of Scandia Restaurant, have catered these yearly festivals. They have done a fantastic job with this endeavor and are very much appreciated. This year’s Memorial Service was well attended and supported. John Nygard attained Life Membership. Our lodge had the distinct honor of being congratulated by International for being amongst the top 20 lodges that brought in new members. Gold Sports Medals were awarded to Joe and Helen Skodje and the Bronze Medal was awarded to Sonia Hillestad and Phil Nelsen. Both Ray Fyhrie and Selma Gunderson receive life membership pins. This was an exciting year for our Regatta. Our own Viking crew was filmed for TV personality, Wes Sargenson, for his “Wes Side Story.” This segment was presented on TV many times and afforded our lodge much needed publicity. Our members voted to elect officers for two-year terms, as opposed to the traditional one-year term. We again received the Third District Lodge of the Year Award for the year 1994 and Joe Skodje received the Gold Merit Award for President of that year. This marked the 5th time that our lodge has been awarded the Lodge of the Year in our 18-year existence. George Lynch was once again voted in as President of the year 1996 with Harry Sumstad doing the installation. Due to much interest from members anxious to learn to speak Norwegian, Karin Clement started a language class, which filled up rapidly. Ed and Jean Gronner receive their 25th year membership pins. A successful Syttende Mai Regatta was chaired by, George Lynch, Fred Berg and Bill Leonard. Our Memorial Service was once again held with good attendance. The newly formed Scholarship Committee, comprised of Jim Hillestad, Jim Berge, and Harry Sumstad presented two $500.00 scholarships to worthy students, who must be members of Sons of Norway or family of members. The first two recipients were Garth Black, grandson of Joe and Helen Skodje, and Jacqueline Dutot, granddaughter of May Dutot. We were fortunate to have a local physician, Dr J. Wayne Phillips, donate 100 CD’s and 100 cassettes to this worthy cause with no cost to us. Hopefully, the sale of these items will bring in much needed revenue for this project. Twenty-five year pins were awarded to Ruth Bird and Ellen Marapodi. Sandy Inman graciously accepted chairperson for our Scandinavian Festival, despite the recent loss of her father. For the past 20 years, every Christmas we have had an extremely successful “Toys for Needy Girls and Boys” project. Clearwater’s Officer Friendly has annually picked up all the donated toys at our Christmas party to distribute to needy children. The police department has commended us for our generosity and faithfulness in this regard. Our Glade Norske Singers and Dancers have been active in our community for many years, we have been warmly welcomed. Suncoast Lodge has participated in both the Third District Bowling Tournaments and Sun Viking Lodge’s bowling tournament, winning awards almost every time. We also participated yearly in Clearwater’s “Fun n’ Sun” Parade as well as the Santa Lucia Program at Grace Lutheran Church. In essence “We must be doing something right” 1997- 2001 Written by Carol Anderson & Joe Skodje 1997 - Jim Berge was installed as President by Claire Eriksen, from SunViking Lodge. One of the first items on Jim’s agenda was to implement a “social luncheon group” aimed towards members who are no longer able to drive at night. We held our first lodge garage sale in the Skodje’s garage. Chaired by Carol Anderson, our members simply had too much fun and the highlight was Joe’s chili served throughout the day to all workers. This year our 20th Anniversary, chaired by Helen Skodje and Ethel Sumstad, was celebrated at the Clearwater Country Club. Our Memorial Service, chaired by Jim and Terri Berge and Olga Jacobsen with music by de Glade Norske Singers and soloist Karen Kurth was again memorable. Carol Anderson chaired our Syttende Mai Regatta and Sandy Inman, Scholarship Chairman, presented checks to, Jovan Johannessen, grandson of Jean & Art; Elizabeth Parker, granddaughter of Chris Berg; and Phillip Jalowic grandson of Jim and Terri Berge. This year we were very fortunate to have Ann Howard Morgan as our Publicity Chairperson. She did such a fine job we almost found ourselves having to turn people away from events, ie. Helen Skodje, who chaired our Scandinavian Festival, had a big job trying to seat and feed all the people our publicity brought in. A highlight of the festival was the raffling of a beautiful Rosemaled box painted by member Sonia Hillestad. Once again, Ed Manson made some much needed boat repairs, as well as designing and installing some authentic Norwegian oarlocks. Midway through his term Jim found it necessary to step down from the presidency and Helen Skodje graciously filled his remaining term. Suncoast lodge donated $500 to the North Dakota flood victims. 1998 - Helen Skodje continued as our President. We voted to continue the Garage Sale (in order to get more of Joe’s chili) and Chris Berg quickly volunteered to again be our chairman. Our Memorial Service was chaired once again by Jim and Terry Berge, and Olga Jacobsen with music by our Glade Norske Singers. Carol Anderson chaired our Syttende Mai Regatta and Sandy Inman presented checks to our scholarship recipients; Karin Anne Soukup, daughter of Cecelia and granddaughter of Ray Fyhrie; and Velvet Berge, granddaughter of Jim and Terri. Over the summer we held a sanding/painting party for our “Solkyst” Viking boat, black, maroon and royal blue colors presented an interesting change. Marvin Gustafson and Helen Skodje represented our lodge at the 3rd District Convention in Lancaster, PA, where Florida made a bid to bring the 2000 Convention to Clearwater Beach and won. Tusen Takk to members Earl Fiene for presenting us with a new American Flag and to Marion Hill who has been sending birthday cards to absent members. Carol Anderson, Phil Nelsen, and Helen Skodje won trophies at the Sun Viking Charity Bowl while The team of Carol Anderson, Sandy Inman, Phil Nelsen and Chris Berg took 2nd place in the Third District Bowling Tournament. Under the chairmanship of Helen Skodje, our Scandinavian Festival moved to the Seminole Recreation Center where it was a big success thanks in part, to our “bakers” and “Crafty Ladies”. Dance music was provided by the “Family Affair”, and entertainment was provided by de Glade Norske Singers and Dancers. With our boat in full parade regalia, we marched in the Clearwater Christmas Parade. Vice President / Membership Chairman, Phil Nelsen, set a goal of 50 new members for the year and we reached 39. 1999 - Phil Nelsen, President elect for a two-year term, invited Roger Sean, founder of our lodge, to be installing officer. Chris Berg chaired another Garage Sale and Marvin and Vivian Gustafson chaired our Memorial Service. Member Leif Olson made some major boat repairs taking out the old foam bottom that had filled up with water and replacing it with a new floor. Additionally, he ordered and brought new oars to us from Canada. Sandy Inman chaired our Regatta. Our Women’s Crew took 1st place in the women’s race. Scholarship Chairman, Vivian Gustafson, announced recipients as Carol Jalowic, granddaughter of Jim & Teri Berge, and Sarah Garbutt, granddaughter of Bill & Helen Johnson. Donna Norman accepts the position of Newsletter Editor, the position vacated by Ray Fyhrie after 20 years in office. Doris Hanson becomes our 1st Gold Member. Mid-year we were forced to move our meeting place from the American Legion Hall to our present location at the Seminole Elks. Although smaller, we’ve found it to be cozier and more suitable to socializing. Carol Anderson chaired the Scandinavian Festival again with entertainment provided by the “Family Affair” and the “Swedish Men’s Chorus.” At regular social meetings we collected food for the Clearwater Food Pantry and special items needed for the Haven House, a home in Clearwater for abused women and children. Helen Skodje made small Christmas stockings that we handed out to members for collecting loose change. Members then brought their stockings full of money to the December social meeting. Monies collected went to the Haven House. Officer Friendly presented a plaque to our lodge in recognition of our many years of service with our annual Christmas “Boatload of Toys” and bikes to the children of Clearwater. 2000 -Beginning a second year of leadership, Phil and the board takes us into the New Millennium. As President, Phil had a dream to start a lodge youth program. He was elated when new member, Nancy Kaufman, came on board with the same goal. She quickly accepted the challenge of being named our first Youth Director. We continue our garage sale, thanks to Chairman Chris Berg and Joe’s chili. Gus and Vivian did another fine job chairing the Memorial Service. Thanks to Donna Norman and Jackie Wynn, we have a month long display of Norwegian items at each of the Largo and Seminole Libraries. In April we honored our long time newsletter editor Ray Fyhrie at a special program. There were lots of laughs and tears, as well as many funny stories and words of praise, related by lodge members and members of Ray’s family. The final performance of the popular “Joe & Ray Comedy Duo” took place when they sang a couple of songs they have sung over the last 20+ years with de Glade Norske. Ray was given the honor of Editor Emeritus for his 20 years with an award-winning newsletter. Tusen Takk Ray. Our Syttende Mai Regatta, chaired by Jackie Wynn, continues to be an important event in the lodge. Vivian Gustafson, Scholarship Chairman, presented a check to Nicolas Feiffer, grandson of Gladys Feiffer. The huge event this year is the 3rd District Convention, held in our own backyard at the Clearwater Beach Hilton Hotel. Joe Skodje was the Ways and Means Chairman and Phil Nelsen, Convention Program Director. Phil Nelsen, Sandy Inman, Olga Jacobsen, and Marvin Gustafson represented our lodge as delegates. Jackie Wynn baked 1000 cookies to help feed the attendees at coffee breaks. At the gala affair on Saturday evening, dance music was provided by our own “Long Island Sound” with Phil Nelsen, Carol Anderson and Joe Hertik and the “Family Affair” with Ruth and Harry Nelsen. Our lodge earned several awards for ’98 and ’99 including: Honorable Mention - Newsletter, 1999, Ray Fyhrie editor; President Gold Award - 1998, Helen Skodje, President; President Gold Award - 1999, Phil Nelsen, President: Lodge Gold Award for 1998 & 1999; and Needlecraft 3rd Place Award - Ethel Sumstad. We were also awarded the Founder’s Certificate in recognition of our success in “attracting” new members, a phase coined by our President, Phil Nelsen, and adopted at the convention. We had a great turnout for our Fall Fun and Games Picnic in Walsingham Park. President Phil had the good fortune to become a delegate to the International Convention held in Stavanger, Norway, representing Zone 5 and Suncoast Lodge. Carol Anderson chaired our Scandinavian Festival for which Olga Jacobsen baked 36 loaves of Julekaka. Congratulations Suncoast for bringing home the Traveling Trophy from the SunViking Charity Bowl with the team of Carol Anderson, Sandy Inman, Phil Nelsen and Harry Sumstad. Spreading some holiday cheer, directed by Olga Jacobsen and Nancy Kaufman’s youth group, several of our members and kids took Poinsettia plants to our shut-in’s and older members. What a great idea Olga and Nancy. This year our Christmas stocking monies went to the Kimberly House for unwed Mothers in Clearwater. 2001 Our own Harry Sumstad installs Marvin Gustafson as President for a two-year term. We continue to hold our annual events, the Garage Sale where Chris continues to reign and Joe’s chili is still a highlight. Our beautiful, well attended, Memorial Service continues to inspire, chaired by Gus and Vivian, with hymns by de Glade Norske singers, solo by Monica Bendiksen Brown, directed by Ruth Nelsen and accompanied by Jean Stenehjem. Our annual Syttende Mai Regatta, chaired by Jackie Wynn, enjoys continued success. Attendees at this year’s Regatta Dinner, held at the Cove Cay County Club, were treated to our “Kid’s Klubb” first performance of “Billy Goats Gruff” under the direction of Nancy Kaufman. Once again Vivian announced scholarship recipients to be Sharyn Parker, granddaughter of Chris Berg and Alison Rose Fyhrie granddaughter of Ray Fyhrie. Our sports program is growing and now includes tennis and golf. Bowlers especially like going for ice cream and donuts and the rowers look forward to after practice potlucks. Next year we may consider adding Weight Watchers to the sports program. Our woman’s rowing team continues to be #1. Winning all three major events this year - Springfest, Syttende Mai and Leif Erickson races and they continue to “rub-it-in” to the men’s team. Members Mike and Rea Sieber designed new shirts for the rowing crew. Mike Sieber and Phil Nelsen won the 1st Annual Ft Myers Shuffleboard Tournament, held because inclement weather canceled the boat race. Our “Suncoast Players” performed “The Norwegian Weakest Link” written by member Mike Sieber. Our Christmas stocking monies were presented to the Kimberly House for unwed mothers in Clearwater. It is with great sadness we bid a fond farewell to the Scandia Restaurant. For years, the Scandia has catered our regatta and festivals. Owner, members Poul and Carol Madsen, retired from the business and the lodge. We will surely miss them. Looking back over the past 25 years we find that much has remained the same. We have continued the traditions established by our predecessors such as our Annual Syttende Mai Regatta, the Memorial Service and our Scandinavian Festival. Our monthly newsletter continues to be a source of pride and we strive to support and maintain camaraderie with our sister lodges. Yet we also realize times have changed. The past five years has been a period of rebuilding. Over these years, as we’ve lost so many of our older members, we have tried to be innovative, looking for new ways to “attract” members and inspire them to the same commitment in promoting our Scandinavian Heritage and Culture. Our monthly social programs continue to be varied, fun and informative with topics relating to our Scandinavian heritage i.e. bunads, sweaters, trolls, and Norwegian traditions, to local talent, to our kids shows, to Phil’s Night with the “Family Affair or “The Long Island Sound” to our own “Suncoast Players” or just plain “fun and games”. Our luncheon group started by Jim Berge is still going strong and regularly attracts 25 to 35 members at each luncheon. Our youth group is small, but they now have a regular meeting place and monthly activities. We have rebuilt our women’s rowing crew and are in the process of rebuilding a strong men’s team. Carol Anderson and Sandy Inman continue to head our “Boutique” which was started in 1980 by Linda Pedersen and Helen Skodje. This brings much needed money to the lodge to help fund our activities. Tusen Takk to Carol and Sandy. Through dedication and service, our tireless members have made Suncoast the strong lodge it is today. And with that continued commitment we will remain “united and true”. Tusen Takk one and all. 2002-2007 Written by Sandy Inman 2002 - We continued all the successful activities from the previous year, such as the Zone 5 Memorial Service, the lodge garage sale, our Norwegian artifacts displays at local libraries, and many sports activities. The highlight of the year was our 25th Anniversary Dinner Dance at the Cove Cay Country Club in Clearwater. We were treated to patriotic entertainment by the Men’s Chorus which brought tears to many eyes. A skit titled “Snow Lena and the Seven Trolls” written by our own Carol Anderson was so funny, we were expecting offers from Hollywood. And Dennis Andersen delighted us with his impersonation of Marilyn Monroe, singing Happy Birthday Mr. President in honor of our 25 years. Along with other awards, Mae Hyland received her 50 year membership pin. Our President’s messages in the newsletters were printed in English and Norwegian (translation by Jan Grimstad). Monica Brown added Norwegian phrases to the Newsletter every month. Business meetings were held in Board members homes with a special incentive known only to those who attended. Noon luncheons provided up-to-date information for members who no longer wished to drive at night. The Kid’s Klubb met and participated in many cultural and fraternal activities including organizing the September social meeting where they introduced Barne Bingo. In March, the first annual Multi-lodge picnic was held at Philippe Park with attendance from Sarasota, Spring Hill, Tampa, and Suncoast. Our lodge will host this event once every four years. We also participated in Viking World Orlando’s Springfest in Sanford, Fl. Poor organization on the part of the hotel, led to a wedding being performed on the lawn at the same time the races were being conducted. Can you imagine trying to say “I do” while in the background you hear “Stroke, Stroke, Stroke?” The funniest thing was that later in July of 2006, while in Sanford for the Viking magazine photo shoot , Phil was approached by a man who happened to be the groom on that fateful day. He said the most memorable part of his wedding day was the Viking boat races. In April, Joe and Kurt Skodje went dog sledding at the Spitsbergen, Svalbard. They were 600 miles north of Norway, a jumping off place for the North Pole. What a great adventure they had. An article about their trip appeared in a later edition of the Viking magazine. Do you think we can have dog sledding in Florida? Our 21st Syttende Mai regatta took place in May with Sandy and Rea Sieber as co-chairpersons. The women’s boat crew took first place again and the men decided to go back to the drawing board, although they did well in the first heat. Gail Sorensen announced the 2002 scholarship winner, Timothy Garbutt, grandson on Vilho and Helen Johnson. Once again the Suncoast Players entertained with a skit written by Mike Sieber and titled The Norway School. In June, our elected delegates, Chris Berg, Sandy, and Phil attended the Third District Convention in Connecticut. Phil was re-elected Zone 5 Director. Monday morning bowling, Family Fun Night bowling, tennis, rowing, and golf were continued and in July, we went ice skating. Yes, in Florida, in July!!! Some of us learned that it isn’t as easy as when we were kids. Phil and Carol represented us at the 3D Golf tournament in Myrtle Beach, S.C. in September. Our first fishing trip occurred in October and a later issue of Viking magazine showed a photo of us as we posed with our catches. Chris Taylor won’t forget it because she got hit in the head with Sandy’s fish. We also participated in the Leif Erikson Regatta in October and the Spring Hill Charity Bowling Tournament in November. Carol Anderson won a trophy for high series for women. The Norske Singles Group became an active part of the lodge with a variety of activities. Thanks to Chris Taylor for organizing this group. The scholarship committee, (Nancy Kaufman, Diane Anderson, and Gail Sorensen) re-evaluated the requirements for our scholarship program. They had many fund raisers such as the Pampered Chef sale in November. 40% of the proceeds went to the Scholarship fund. December brought us to our Christmas party with the usual Norwegian goodies, singing around the Christmas tree, Officer Friendly, and of course, Santa (played once again by John Barr). The Christmas stocking money this year went to the Kimberly House in Clearwater. 2003 - Zone 5 (Alive) Director, Phil Nelsen installed Sandy Inman as President for the next two years. As she took the reins, she let everyone know that the issue of brownies, with or without nuts had been finally put to rest. Art and Jean Johannessen achieved their golden membership status. Carol, as membership Chairperson set a goal of 25 new members. She devised many incentives and innovative ideas to acquire new members. One was a leader board challenge which was displayed at every meeting. By the end of the year, we had surpassed the goal and had 28 new members. Great work, Carol. Our Zone 5 Memorial Service in February was held at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Largo. The Past Presidents Club meeting was held prior to the service. This brought even more participation from other lodges because we had 73 people in attendance. Once again, Gus did a wonderful job of organizing this important day for remembering our departed brothers and sisters. Many of us supported Sun Viking’s 15th Anniversary by attending their dinner/dance. Beginning in March, our meeting place and day changed. We began holding social and business meetings at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Largo on the 2nd Friday of the month. The emphasis on family participation was one reason for the change in day since there would be no school the next day. Our First Annual Lutefisk dinner took place at Foxy O’Toole’s Restaurant on a Sunday in March. The menu had lutefisk and meatballs, vegetables, lefse, and dessert. It was a huge success. This was possible because of new member Sherry Cavanaugh, who with husband Paul are owners of Foxy O’Toole’s. Sherry and her crew did all the cooking & serving. Can you believe some people had three or more helpings of lutefisk????? Uff Da! Suncoast Lodge also participated in Viking World Orlando’s Springfest which for the first time was held in Titusville. Both the men’s and women’s crews had trouble with an oarlock breaking. In the women’s race, the wind died while Suncoast was in first place. To compensate, we sailed way beyond the buoy prompting the lookout boat to warn us that we would probably miss cocktail hour. This led to a very long rowing leg back to the finish line, but we did it, came in first and did not miss cocktail hour. On Sunday, we bowled in the Third District Bowling Tournament and won several trophies. Phil placed first for High Game Scratch. During this month, Dean became full time editor. A family membership fee and a youth membership fee was passed by the board. In April, many of our members attended the 2nd Multi-lodge Picnic held in Spring Hill. The origin of a Dining Out Group added a new activity for our membership. The purpose was to expand our social interaction. The first restaurant we dined at was the Olive Garden. In May we participated in the Sun n Fun Parade. Thanks to Carol, Joe and Helen organizing the decorators and other details, the Vikings took to the streets with a flair. We also held our annual garage sale in May at Sandy’s house and of course our Twenty-Second Syttende Mai Regatta at Philippe Park and Dinner Dance at the Clearwater Country Club. This year’s regatta was chaired by Rea Sieber and Jackie Wynn. Entertainment was once again by the Suncoast Players. (We need to form a Guild.) The scholarship winner for 2003 was Kristin Sumstad, daughter of Steve and Barbara Sumstad. Remember Phil Nelsen getting everyone up to do the Uff Da Hokey Pokey? In June, the Dining Out Group went to Bill Irle’s Early Bird Dinner Theater. Carol hosted a new member/visitor “pot luck” as part of our membership drive. This allowed new members and perspective members the opportunity to meet a few members at a time. The organization of the “Young Vikings” Club began to take shape. The young people planned a carwash for July with the proceeds being matched by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. The profits are to go to Belcher Elementary school. Foxy O’Toole’s provided us with a Wall of Fame in the restaurant for displaying trophies, plaques, awards, and pictures accumulated at various events. July’s social meeting brought yet another skit, by Mike Sieber. The Kid’s Klubb was entertained in August by our own Carl Fyhrie, the magician. When the kids would ask Carl “How did you do that?” the response would always be “Very well, thank you.” Carl never ceases to amaze us with his magic tricks. The September social was an evening for the initiation of new members and Brothers’ Night with Dennis Andersen, Joe Skodje and company performing short, hilarious pantomime skits. If you haven’t seen Knut Berland in all his glory, you’ve missed a good show. What a ham!!! The dessert that night was Valhalla Ice Cream from Norway. October was Sisters’ Night and members were treated to a skit titled, The Heavenly Viking Nursing Home written by Carol Anderson. Remember Helen, jumping up from her wheelchair and singing “I like Bread & Butter?” Then there was Ruth Nelsen, who became so engrossed in her part she just kept playing and had to be told to stop. The Can Can number with Rea, Sandy, and Tesa Jektvik got a lot of laughs when Sandy lost her petticoat. We also participated in the Leif Erikson Regatta in Jensen Beach. We continued to set up our boutique which is always successful there. The November social was International Night with eight countries represented. Members decorated tables in a specific country theme and brought international foods to share. We sent two teams to the Sun Viking Charity Bowling Tournament and many attended the Dinner Dance afterwards. Our Christmas party in December had a huge attendance with all the usual dishes, presents for needy children, and of course singing. This year, the Christmas stocking money went to CASA, an organization which helps abuse victims. Another new member potluck was held in December. The new member Challenge winner for 2003 was Nancy Kaufman who sponsored 7 of the 28 new members. Congratulations, Nancy. 2004 - The January social meeting was a new member initiation dinner meeting since we did not have to install officers. The Adopt-A-School program was getting under way with Gail Grebe as coordinator. In February, the Norske Singles went to the dog track. Also during this month, we held our second annual Lutefisk dinner as well as the Zone 5 Memorial Service and Past Presidents meeting. The Kid’s Klubb sold extra lefse, flatbread, and lingonberries left from the Lutefisk Dinner and used the proceeds along with the proceeds from the carwash to purchase books for the lending library at Belcher Elementary School as part of our Adopt-A-School program. Each book had a sticker with our website address and the wording “Donated by Suncoast Lodge #562, Sons of Norway“. Later in May, some of our members were honored at a Volunteer breakfast at Belcher Elementary. The Norske Singles went to the Strawberry Festival in March, our boat crews took to the water at Springfest in Titusville, and once again our membership was entertained by a skit, this one titled, The Norway Diet Clinic by Mike Sieber. Tampa Lodge hosted the Third Multi-lodge picnic at Lowry Park and some of our members attended Sarasota’s 30th Anniversary Dinner. Our social meeting, planned by Cultural Director, Tesa Jektvik had lefse and waffle making as well as woodcarving and embroidery demonstrations. In May, Joe Skodje presented an informative documentary about the origins of Tubfrim which began in 1928 to help children with Tuberculosis. Joe along with Mark Larson chaired the twenty-third Syttende Mai Regatta. Finally both of our boat crews took first place. The Dinner Dance was held at the Clearwater Country Club and the scholarship winner this year was Stephanie Berg, granddaughter of Christel Berg and the late Fred Berg. The Suncoast Vikings were cheered and sometimes jeered (Phil kept scaring all the little kids with his hoarse horn) as we marched in the Sun’n’Fun parade in Clearwater. Henrik Hansen celebrated his 100th birthday this month. He was very happy to have so many members visit him. The lodge did a mass mailing of birthday cards with the intent that he receive 100 for his birthday. Carol Anderson and Knut Berland were elected delegates to the Third District Convention in the Poconos. Suncoast Lodge won Gold Merit awards for 2003 & 2004 (Gus & Sandy, Presidents) and our Kid’s Klubb took first place in the Youth Division for Folk Art Awards for their Styrofoam trolls. Other activities during the summer were another new member potluck and the Dining Out Group. With the threat of Hurricane Charley in August, the social meeting was cancelled. We were very fortunate that Charley decided to take a detour and missed Pinellas County. Unfortunately, there was a lot of damage to the Jensen Beach area so the Leif Erikson Regatta had to be cancelled. In the Fall a park in Spring Hill was named after Linda Pedersen. Linda was a great humanitarian and participated in many volunteer projects. She had been very active in our lodge for many years. This was a well deserved honor for a very special lady. The Dining Out Group went to the Octoberfest at the German American Club. Carol was instrumental in getting the New Glade Norske dancers organized again with the tutelage of Helen and Joe Skodje. In place of the Scandinavian Festival, the lodge held the First Annual Medieval Viking Festival. The evening started with the entrance of the King and Queen, Harry and Ethel Sumstad. They were escorted to their places of honor by the “New” Glade Norske dancers, who entertained later in the program. Everyone had to bring their own spoon for the lapskaus. Also on the menu were relish trays, herring, flatbrod, jello with vanilla sauce and homemade Norwegian cookies. No Medieval festival would be complete without horse races. Pom Poms, for cheering your favorite horse to victory were provided to the different tables. For the shoppers, we had the boutique with new items, a “trolle booth” with gently used items, a Viking silent auction, 50/50, and door prizes. Thanks to Sherry Cavanaugh for catering and Carol Anderson for the organization of the program. It was quite different from all previous events held by the lodge. The only business on this evening was the presentation of the new slate of officers for 2005 and the decision to change the term of office back to a year. December started out with Dean Brown organizing a group to attend the IMAX theater at MOSI in Tampa. The feature film was the VIKINGS. Unfortunately to get a discount rate we had to have 15 people & at the last minute some people did not show up so Nancy, being the adventurer she is, rounded up a few more Norwegians in the lobby, who were happy to get a discount rate by joining our group. The Norske singles gathered to view the Christmas lights in Lake Seminole Park. Our Christmas party was a success as usual and John continues to be a fantastic Santa. The Christmas stocking money went to SHARE this year. 2005 - Carolyn Anderson was installed by Harry Sumstad as the 2005 President. The Zone 5 Memorial Service was held in January due to a conflict in scheduling. This is the tenth year that Suncoast has hosted this event. February brought Suncoast to its 28th year of existence. Our new President, Carol wrote a new lodge song called “This Lodge is Your Lodge” to the tune of This Land is Your Land. The Swedish men’s chorus entertained the membership and all kinds of Lovers (chocolate, cars, dogs, etc.) did little skits. Joe made one of his famous Photo Parades of the entertainment. Sandy and her dog, Freia along with Knut did “How Much Is That Doggie In The Window”. The third annual Lutefisk dinner was held at Foxy O’Toole’s and we saw the beginning of Happy Hour at Foxy’s on the fourth Friday of the month. March’s social meeting was Phil and Joe’s Place. The setting was a nightclub and the entertainment involved comedy skits and all kinds of dancing from the electric slide to the chicken dance. The women’s crew took first and the men’s crew took second place at Springfest and we participated in the 3rd District Bowling Tournament where Carol won a 1st place trophy. Our Adopt-A-Mile clean up was organized by Carol in April. After our first clean up, our lodge’s name on was put on the Adopt-A-Mile signs located on Keene Road between Rosery and Nursery. We are committed to cleaning up the mile once a quarter for two years. And, finally, our website is up and accessible. The site is www.suncoastlodge.com. After many years, Nancy felt that it was time to put the Kid’s Klubb on hold. She put her heart and soul into it and the children participating had a lot of fun and learned many things about Norway and its customs. Thanks, Nancy for your perseverance and dedication to these young people. Our 24th Syttende Mai Regatta and dinner dance was held at Philippe Park and Cove Cay respectively. The women’s crew came in second only because our tiller broke shortly after we rounded the first buoy. Jackie Olsen, in her true Norwegian fashion, put her backside to the wind and tried to steer with her hands by hanging over the stern. Bottoms up to Jackie! Ray Fyhrie was named Commodore for the event. Carol, Chris Taylor, and Mark Larson attended the First Leadership training in Spring Hill. At our social meeting, several new members were initiated and everyone was challenged to use lefse in an innovative way. Unfortunately, with the loss of our musician, Ethel we had to start using taped music for the National Anthems. We also participated with Prince of Peace in the Join Hands Day. Thanks to Joe Centineo and John Hlivyak, associate members of our lodge, a drill team was organized to help with installation of Third District Officers in June of 2006. Talent nights are always fun. Will anyone ever forget Dennis and Mary Andersen with their kazoos and singing fish? What about “Edith Ann” and the gigantic high chair? September’s social featured professional Hawaiian dancers. WOW! They were fantastic and their costumes were beautiful. Sarasota hosted the Multi-lodge picnic this year. Our newsletter was officially put on our website so anyone could access it. October was a busy month with the Leif Erikson Regatta, the Dining Out Group, Adopt-A-Mile and the wedding of Ole and Lena. The wedding party included Carol Anderson as the Maid of Honor (love the dress), Tom Hovland as the groom, Ole, and Sandy as Lena. Joe did a fantastic job with the Photo Parade he created from this meeting. This must have been the first wedding Tom ever attended. Whoever heard of the groom walking down the aisle with the Maid of Honor? The second Medieval Viking Feast (changed from Festival) was chaired by Nancy with the King and Queen being Helen and Joe Skodje this year. A new slate of officers for 2006 were elected. We took two teams to the Sun Viking Charity Bowling Tournament and came home with three individual trophies and the first place team trophy. Our members carpooled to attend another fantastic Julefest sponsored by the Tampa Lodge. Our Christmas party with Toys for Tots, Santa Lucia procession, singing around the Christmas tree, visit from Santa, and the traditional smorgasbord was a wonderful ending to a very active year. The Barbershop Quartet was the entertainment for the evening. The Christmas stocking donations were presented to the Food Pantry. After several months of collecting donations in memory of Ethel Sumstad, Lodge members were on hand as Harry Sumstad presented a plaque with Ethel’s photograph and inscription, along with a check for $517.00, to the Kimberly Home in Clearwater. 2006 - Carol turned over the reins of leadership to Christine Taylor at the Installation dinner in January. Joe Centineo prepared a spaghetti dinner with all the trimmings. Social meetings were moved to the third Friday of the month . February , March, and April were busy months with the Adopt-A-Mile, business and social meetings, and the eleventh Zone 5 Memorial Service. Viking World Orlando cancelled Springfest this year. The West Coast Florida Drill team continued practicing for the upcoming 3rd District Convention and Carol Anderson, Christine Taylor, and Richard Deininger were elected as delegates from our lodge. Two teams represented Suncoast at the 3rd District Bowling Tournament (no trophies this year)! Thanks to Nancy, our Program Chairperson, members who attended the April social meeting were treated with a fantastic program. The dancers from Starstruck Dance Studio put on a wonderful performance. The 25th Syttende Mai Regatta went off without a hitch. The men’s race was lengthened by going through the course twice. Although Orlando was ahead most of the race, our men’s crew out rowed them and took first place. The women’s crew also took first so it was a complete sweep. The regatta was held at Cove Cay with Sincerely Yours providing the dance music. Dean included 16 photos from the regatta in the June newsletter. The Third District Convention, hosted by Suncoast, Tampa, Spring Hill, and Sarasota lodges was held at the Clearwater Beach Hilton Hotel. Representatives to the committee included: Carol Anderson, Ways & Means Chair, Phil Nelsen, Program Chair and Sandy Inman, Convention Shirt Sales. Stan Ewenowski of Tampa Lodge was the Leader of the troupes. What a great job everyone did. Since the Convention’s Viking auction was scheduled for the night of our social meeting, it was decided to encourage members to attend the auction instead of a meeting. Barbara Berntsen was re-elected President of the 3rd District. In July, several members of our boat crew traveled to Sanford to participate along with other lodges in a photo shoot for an article in the Viking Magazine. The article appeared in the October issue and a beautiful, large, color photo of Suncoast Lodge’s Solkyst was on the cover. Suncoast Lodge and Carol Anderson won the Gold Merit Awards for 2005. Once again, Suncoast Lodge hosted the Multi-Lodge Picnic at Philippe Park and we participated in the Leif Erikson Regatta in Jensen Beach. The Viking Feast was moved to October. Nancy and her committee did a wonderful job of decorating right down to the head table being in the shape of a Viking boat complete with shields. Carol Anderson and Phil Nelsen were the King and Queen this year. Many children participated in Talent night in November with Weston Kaufman making his piano debut. Carol and Sandy, who ran the Boutique for twelve years, announced they are stepping down. This year’s Christmas stocking donations went to Clothes To Kids, Inc. The Senior Citizen Harmonica Club entertained that night. TUSEN TAKK to Maria Viking for the FANTASTIC job she did as Historian. The scrapbook she made certainly shows how much time she put into this position. It is the best scrapbook I have seen yet. If Maria can do half the job as Membership Chairperson as she did with the scrapbook, 2007 should see a heavy increase in membership. Since we lost some wonderful friends to deaths this year, we need to fill the voids they left in our ranks. 2007 - Joe Skodje has installed Past President, Phil Nelsen as the President of Suncoast Lodge. This year we are looking forward to celebrating our 30th Anniversary in conjunction with our Syttende Mai Regatta. Congratulations Suncoast. It is difficult to realize that 30 years have passed since a group of people, interested in forming a new Sons of Norway Lodge, gathered together in the German American Hall. Even as we lose so many of our older members, we continue to “attract” new younger, members. “Keep up the good work. Go, Suncoast.” May the next five years be as eventful and prosperous as the last five. Remember. THIS LODGE IS OUR LODGE.
